Negev prison,, a graveyard of living

August 25, 2024

The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs stated that the Israeli authorities and the IPS pursued retaliatory measures since the beginning of aggression last October to crack down on detainees, as they intended to suppress, torture and deprive them of the simplest rights. As a result, many detainees had lost their lives, while others were subjected to dangerous injuries, dermatological diseases, weight loss and fatigue, in addition to medical neglect and deprivation of medication.

In this context, the lawyers of the commission managed to visit Negev prison to check on their living conditions and document the fascism and racism they are experiencing. They met the following detainees:
1. Detainee Qusai Hsais, 20, who was arrested in 4/11/2023. He suffers from scabies and has critical health condition, as he was scratching throughout the visit. He requested treatment but the administration refused, and mentioned that he couldn’t not sleep for days, and that 10 of his colleagues suffer from the same disease.
2. Detainee Ayman Mahmoud Atshan, 29, from Ramallah. He was arrested in 1/11/2023. He has severe pain in his broken ribs due to intense beat. He confirmed that there are no cameras in some places in the prison, in which detainees are subjected to intense beat and torture.
3. Detainee Mujahed Abu Al Ezz, 30, from Jenin. He was arrested in 12/12/2023 and sentenced to administrative detention. He suffers from scabies.
4. Detainee Junaid Abdulfattah, 31, from Nablus. He was arrested in 7/1/2023 and was subjected to intense beat several times.
5. Detainee Sharif Qandil, 42, from Askar refugee camp/ Nablus. He was arrested in 11/12/2002 and sentenced to 23 years. He suffers from spinal disc problems since 2010, and the painkillers have been cut off since October 2023.
6. Detainee Qusai Abu Al Wafa, 22, from Al Zawiya/ Jenin, who is arrested since 3/5/2023. He could not complete the visit because he was in sorrow due to his mother’s death.
7. Detainee Jalal Hilal Shakhsheer, 31, from Nablus. He has injuries in his head due to attacks by Cater special forces, which led to a deterioration in his health condition.

The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs holds the occupation fully accountable for the lives of detainees in Israeli prisons, as detention centers have been turned into places of revenge since the beginning of the genocide. The commission called on the international human rights organizations and the international committee of the Red Cross to stand with detainees and take their responsibility to stop these systematic crimes and extrajudicial killings against thousands of our people inside the Israeli prisons.
