Detainees held in Jelboa and Megiddo prisons suffer from the policy of blackmail carried out by the prisons’ administration

August 10, 2024

🔴 The Commission confirmed that the detainees’ daily needs, represented in the basic rights such as food, clothes and medical care, have become difficult to obtain. Thus, the policy of starvation has weakened their bodies, and the lack of clothes and hygiene materials besides the high temperature and the overcrowding has created unhealthy environment.

🔴 The lawyer of the commission visited detainee Ahmad Syajat, from Jenin, who is detained since 2021. He was subjected to fierce torture in the past few months, which led to loss of his upper and lower teeth, where he became unable to eat and lost 20 kgs, besides, he did not receive any medical treatment.

🔴 The lawyer also visited detainee Rami Hsais from Jenin, detained since a year. He suffers from a complicated dermatologic disease, in addition to severe pain in his back. He wasn’t allowed to go to the hospital, and he lost 20 kgs.

🔴 The commission confirmed that the administration of Megiddo prison has intensified the acts of intimidation and threats against detainees during the lawyers’ visit, in order to prevent them from narrating the bad conditions imposed on them.

🔴 The lawyer stated that she managed to visit a detainee held in Megiddo prison, who looked tired and exhausted due to the intimidation policy and the bad treatment he received before the visit. The police officers subordinated to the prison’s administration were present near the detainee during their conversation, repeatedly instructing him to raise his voice so they could hear what he was saying.

🔴 The lawyer confirmed that the general conditions in Megiddo prison remain unchanged, as the food is poor, detainees sleep hungry, they are ill treated and exposed to intense beat, assaults, medical neglect, lack in clothes and blankets and exposed to other sanitations, deprivation and other abusive measures that were imposed on them since October 7.
