🔴 In light of new testimonies on attacking detainee Abdullah Barghouthi with intense beat in Shatta prison

🔴 The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Society Prisoner’s Club hold the occupation fully accountable for his fate

July 24, 2024

Ramallah
The Commission of Detainees’ and the Palestinian Society Prisoner’s Club hold the IPS fully accountable on the fate and life of detainee Abdullah Barghouthi, detained since 2003 and sentenced to (67) terms of life imprisonment. This came in light of new testimonies from detainees who were liberated recently, and confirmed that he was attacked by special forces in Shatta prison, causing him fractures in the chest.

The commission and the club considered what happened to Barghouthi and other leader detainees is an actual attempt of assassination, pointing out that the IPS has targeted leaders the of Captive Movement through torture, isolation, transfer and continuous abuse, in addition to the obstruction of lawyers visits, where the IPS has rejected the lawyers request three times.

The Commission and the Club stated that the testimony of attacking Barghouthi is among several initial testimonies documented by detainees’ organizations throughout liberated detainees or detainees who were visited by the legal teams. It has been pointed out that these testimonies convey more heartbreaking details every time, as lawyers’ visits are conducted under high supervision, where detainees can’t narrate everything they are subjected to. These testimonies constitute another kind of genocide against our people.

Despite the passage of (290) days of genocide, the extent of crimes and procedures imposed on detainees, besides the torture, starvation and medical crimes, constituted the main reason for the martyrdom of detainees since the beginning of genocide.

In this context, the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club confirm that the current policies with all crimes and brutality committed against detainees are systematic historical policies practiced by the occupation over long decades, but the only variable is related to the unprecedented intensity.

It is worth mentioning that the detainee Barghouthi was exposed to harsh and long interrogation which lasted for several months after his detention in 2003. He also was exposed to isolation that lasted for many years. During his detention, he released many books in which he talked about his struggle against the occupation.

Detainees’ organizations renew their calls to all human rights organizations to conduct an independent investigation in light of the escalation in crimes and collective genocide against our people in Gaza, and put an end to the unprecedented and escalated crimes committed against detainees in Israeli prisons and to restore their actual and necessary role in confronting the brutality of occupation supported by global powers that neglect the humanitarian community and the voices of free people around the world.
