The leader detainee Nael Barghouthi is subjected to brutal attacks before transferring him from Jebloa prison to Shatta prison

 December 24, 2023

The Commission of Detainees’ Affairs denounces the unethical and inhumane practices committed by the IPS against the leader detainee Nael Barghouthi, as they did not take into account his old age, health condition and the 44 years of imprisonment he served.

The commission assured that the detainee Nael Barghouthi was exposed to severe beat by batons on several parts of his body, where the hits were concentrated on the chest and ribs, causing fractures and bruises.

The commission stated that Nael and seven other detainees were held at Jelboa prison in a small narrow cell that contains five beds, which forced three detainees to sleep on the floor. The cell was empty of electrical appliances, and detainees were served with small quantity of food consisted of one kilo and a half of bread and one tablespoon of jam. This condition lasted for 35 days, and then he was transferred to Shatta prison.

The commission emphasized that Nael has described the situation in Shatta prison as difficult and complicated, where the retaliatory measures are represented in the following:

 1. Windows are kept open 24 hours despite the cold weather, noting that they confiscated covers and clothes from detainees

 2. The served food is raw with bad taste and the quantity is insufficient.

 3. pillows, covers, clothes, personal belongings and electrical appliances were confiscated

 4. rooms are overcrowded and detainees sleep on the floor

It is worth mentioning that detainee Nael Barghouthi, 65, from Kobar village/ Ramallah, was detained in 1978 and served 34 years. He was liberated in 2011 by an exchange deal and got arrested again in 2014.
