Three detainees at “Janout” Prison are suffering due to deliberate medical neglect
October 11, 2026
The conditions of Palestinian detainees in Israeli occupation prisons continue to deteriorate amid harsh detention conditions, the spread of diseases, and a lack of healthcare, in clear violation of international conventions and laws that guarantee detainees’ rights and protection.
In a report issued on Sunday following a visit by its lawyer to “Janout” Prison, the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs revealed details of the medical condition of detainee Hayel Deifallah, 60, from the town of Rafat, near Ramallah. He suffers from pain and broken teeth as a result of an assault by Israeli occupation forces following his arrest, which caused several of his teeth to break. He also complains of scabies. The prison administration is deliberately neglecting his medical needs and providing him with no treatment whatsoever.
Meanwhile, the two detainees Odai and Ammar Jamal Anbas, from the town of Dhinnaba in the Tulkarem District, are enduring harsh detention conditions and deteriorating health amid continued shortages of food and deliberate medical neglect.
Odai Jamal Anbas, 35, who has been detained since 25 May 2025, is suffering from a serious medical condition as a result of severe injuries he sustained before his arrest. A bullet fragment remains lodged in his lungs, causing him intense pain. He needs to visit what is referred to as the prison “clinic” and undergo an X-ray. However, the prison authorities deliberately neglect his medical needs by withholding treatment and necessary examinations.
Regarding his detention conditions, he is held at Ramon Prison, where the quantity and quality of food remain poor. His time outside in the prison yard, known as the “fawra,” does not exceed one hour per day at most.
In the same context, Ammar Jamal Anbas, 38, who has been detained since January 21, 2016 and is serving a 24-year prison sentence, is enduring difficult living and health conditions inside Nafha Prison. Food remains extremely scarce, and this has affected his weight: he has lost approximately 17 kilograms since the beginning of the war on the Gaza Strip up to the date of the visit.
Detainee Ammar suffers from pain in his knees and lower back, which worsens during cold weather. The prison administration refuses to provide him with medication for his condition or even any other type of painkiller.
His time outside in the prison yard does not exceed 20 minutes at most.
At the conclusion of its statement, the Commission pointed out that approximately 5,000 detainees held in Israeli occupation prisons suffer from illnesses of varying severity, with some requiring close medical monitoring and ongoing healthcare. The Commission called on international legal and humanitarian institutions to intervene immediately and urgently to save the lives of detainees, particularly those who are ill, and those suffering from serious and intractable medical conditions.
