Occupation reveals martyrdom of Palestinian detainee seven weeks late

Ramallah, Palestine – Israeli occupation authorities have disclosed the martyrdom of Palestinian political detainee Mus’ab Haniyeh, 35, in response to a legal request for information by the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) about the man’s fate.
Haniyeh was killed on January 5, 2025, in Israeli custody. He had been arrested from Hamad city in the Gaza Strip 10 months prior, on March 3, 2024, in good health. He was a husband and father to a nine-year-old boy. The occupation refuses to divulge the manner in which Haniyeh was killed, or even where he was being held.
Haniyeh is the latest Palestinian to be killed in the occupation’s prisons and military camps in obscure ways that the Israeli army continues to conceal. With Haniyeh, there have been 59 identified Palestinian political detainees who have been killed in custody since the start of the genocide in October 2023, at least 38 of them arrested from Gaza. Dozens more have been killed with the occupation refusing to reveal their fate or identities, leaving countless families in fear and psychological torture. The total number of identified martyred detainees since the occupation of 1967 is 296 people. The rate of killings in prisons and military camps is the highest historically.
The occupation army only responds sporadically and arbitrarily to legal requests for information, and often uses the pretext of an ‘ongoing investigation’ to evade accountability, and to torture Palestinians both physically and mentally as a matter of policy. The Israeli army is the only official side able to reveal the fate of martyred Palestinian detainees since there is no evidence of their killing with the army continuing to withhold their bodies.
The Commission and the PPS stress that the rate of Palestinian detainees losing their lives is unprecedented and will only increase with time. Thousands of Palestinians are held behind bars undergoing a myriad of severe violations including torture, starvation, sexual assault, deprivation of medical treatment, unsanitary conditions leading grave and infectious diseases. The international community must act now to save the lives of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli custody.

Ramallah, Palestine - With the martyrdom of the two Palestinian political prisoners, Mohammad Al-Asali and Ibrahim Ashour from Gaza, the total number of identified martyred detainees has risen to 58 people, including 37 martyrs from Gaza. There are dozens more unidentified martyred detainees from Gaza who are subject to enforced disappearances in Israel's custody and whom it refuses to provide information on.
The killing of Al-Asali and Ashour brings the total number of identified martyred Palestinian detainees since 1967, to 295 people. There are 67 martyred detainees whose bodies are being withheld, including 56 people since the start of the genocide.

? Two more Palestinian Detainees Martyred in Occupation’s Custody

Ramallah, Palestine – Two Palestinian political prisoners arrested from Gaza have been martyred in the Israeli occupation’s custody, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS), Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association announced today after receiving confirmation from the occupation army.
35-year-old Mohammad Sharif al-Asali was martyred on May 17, 2024, while 25-year-old Ibrahim Adnan Ashour was martyred on June 23, 2024. Both of their bodies are still being withheld by occupation forces.
Mohammad al-Asali is a husband and father-of-four. He was arrested from al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza during the Israeli occupation’s assault in March 2024. His family later learned that he was being held in Asqalan Prison. He had no chronic health problems prior to his arrest according to his family. During the genocide, all of his siblings were martyred, and only his father survived.
As for the martyred detainee Ashour, he was arrested on February 14, 2024, from Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Like al-Asali, he had no known chronic health issues.
Prisoner defense groups submitted multiple requests to visit Ashour thinking he was in Ofer Prison, to no avail. The occupation’s last response was that he was in interrogation and could not be visited. Even though Ashour was killed back in June, occupation authorities did not inform the lawyers until more than six months later. In most of its responses, the occupation claims that the interrogation is ongoing, in an attempt to evade any accountability.
The Commission and the PPS explained that with the martyrdom of al-Asali and Ashour, the number of identified martyred detainees in Israeli prisons since the beginning of the genocide has risen to 58 people, at least 37 of whom were arrested from Gaza. This is the highest number in history, marking this period as the bloodiest in the history of the Palestinian prisoners' movement since 1967. The total number of known martyrs since 1967 now stands at 295 people, with dozens more detainees from Gaza still subject to enforced disappearance.
We hold the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the martyrdom of al-Asali and Ashour. Prisoner institutions reiterate their call to the international human rights system to take effective decisions to hold the leaders of the occupation accountable for the war crimes they continue to carry out against the Palestinian people. We demand sanctions against the occupation that would isolate it internationally and restore the core role of the human rights system, which was established for this purpose. They also called for an end to the exceptional immunity that colonial states have granted Israel, treating it as above accountability, punishment, and justice.

? Detainee Motaz Abu Zneid suffered from severe scabies disease before his martyrdom

Ramallah, Palestine – The 35-year-old detainee Motaz Abu Zneid who was martyred on Monday, January 13, 2025, was suffering from an advanced stage of scabies, during which occupation authorities deprived him of life-saving medical care, leading to his killing, the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society revealed today.
The new details emerged after the PPS spoke to one of the recently released detainees who were held with Abu Zneid at the Ganot prison. He told the PPS that Abu Zneid began suffering from scabies skin disease several months ago. The occupation’s prison authorities deliberately delayed providing him with treatment, causing Abu Zneid’s condition to severely worsen. The boils and swelling on his body became very extreme with the passing of time, and he lost a great deal of weight, until he lost the ability to eat, stand and even use the restroom.
“The top layer of Abu Zneid’s skin began to fall off. We demanded the prison administration transfer him to hospital, but they did not heed our demands. On January 4, he lost consciousness, and two days later he was transferred to the hospital,” the former detainee PPS spoke to said.
Abu Zneid is a husband and father to one child from the city of Dura in Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank. He passed away while in the occupation’s Soroka hospital in the 1948-occupied territories. His family said that he did not have any pre-existing medical conditions before his arrest in June 2023.
The PPS, the Commission of Detainees Affairs, and all other relevant institutions hold the occupation fully responsible for the martyrdom of Abu Zneid and the dozens of other Palestinians who have been killed in custody.
Scabies skin disease has not stopped spreading in the occupation’s prisons to this day. The testimonies of current and released prisoners reflect how the occupation used this disease as a tool for torturing and killing them. Prison authorities deliberately refuse to provide hygienic products and enough ventilation to the prisoners. They also refuse to provide prisoners with an adequate amount of food, water, and clothing, leading to an overall state of weakness in the immune system of the detainees.
The case of the martyr Mohammad Munir Musa from Bethlehem, reflects a similar pattern of abuse by the occupation. Musa, who suffered from diabetes, was martyred in October 2024, after he contracted scabies, leading to his martyrdom. There is more information about detainees from Gaza who were recently martyred as a result of scabies.
The number of identified martyred Palestinian detainees since the start of the genocide in Gaza has risen to 55 people. Dozens of other unidentified detainees arrested from Gaza have been martyred and subject to enforced disappearance. This number is the highest on record. Since the occupation of 1967, there have been least 292 identified martyred Palestinian detainees.
The Commission and the PPS urge immediate intervention to save the lives of thousands of Palestinian detainees held by the occupation, and who are being subject to an unprecedented rate of murder, torture and abuse. The international human rights system must take real steps to hold the occupation accountable for the war crimes they continue to commit against our people, and to impose sanctions with the intent of isolating it. The state of exceptional immunity granted to the occupying state of Israel by the world’s colonial powers has allowed it to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity for decades with zero accountability.
